Pardes Institute Selects Dr. Judy Markose to Direct the Pardes Educators Program
Dr. Markose Will Head Leading Independent Program Training Jewish Day School Teachers
Jerusalem, Israel – March 15, 2007 (25 Adar , 5767) – The Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Judy Markose as head of the Pardes Educators Program which trains teachers for North American Jewish Day Schools. Dr. Markose will assume the new position in September, 2007
Dr. Markose has served as the Director of the Ramah Israel Seminar for the past eight years, supervising 300 students and 50 staff members. Previously, she spent five years as the Director of High School Division of Ramah Programs in Israel, creating academic programs and interfaced with Jewish day schools in North America. Before making Aliyah, Dr. Markose was the principal of a congregational school, and Director of Camp Ramah in Canada. Dr. Markose studied at JTS as an undergraduate, earned a B.A. from Barnard, an M.S.W. from Hunter College School of Social Work, and an Ed. D. from the University of Toronto. Her doctoral thesis studied teachers in a Jewish day school in Canada.
Dr. Susan Wall, Director of the Pardes Educators Program for the past five years, will move into a part-time position as Instructor of Pedagogy for the Educators Program, where she will supervise student teaching and take a lead role in the ongoing professional development of the Programs’ alumni.
“We are excited that Dr. Markose will be joining us, and in conjunction with Dr. Wall and the rest of our outstanding staff, we foresee her continuing the successful innovations which have resulted in the strong demand for our graduates,” said Dr. David I. Bernstein, Dean of Pardes.
The two-year Pardes Educators Program, entering its eighth year in September, combines traditional Jewish text study with a Masters Degree in Jewish Education. The program, developed with and funded by The AVI CHAI Foundation, offers generous financial support for participants.
Pardes offers two additional programs for Jewish educators, the Summer Practicum for Congregational Educators which integrates text study with professional development for supplementary school principals, teachers and lay leaders, and the Summer Curriculum Workshop which offers intensive preparation for novice day school teachers.
