Pardes Educators Program in Jerusalem Selects Hebrew College in Boston as Partner

Day School Teacher Training Program Combines Jewish Text Study with a Masters Degree in Jewish Education

Jerusalem, Israel - January 16, 2006 (16 Tevet) - The Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies Educators Program in Jerusalem is teaming with Hebrew College in Boston to enhance the training of Jewish day school educators. The two-year Pardes Educators Program offers a Certificate of Advanced Jewish Studies from the Pardes Institute and a Masters Degree from The Shoolman Graduate School of Jewish Education of Hebrew College in a program developed with and funded by The AVI CHAI Foundation.

The Pardes Educators Program, now in its 6th year, will include Hebrew College courses in Jewish Studies and Education, advanced Jewish text study in the Pardes Beit Midrash, Hebrew language study, and mentored teaching internships in North America. In return for generous subsidies and living stipends, participants make a three-year commitment to teach Jewish Studies in day schools in North America.

"Our new partnership with Hebrew College will allow us not only to continue to provide passionate and creative day school educators for North America, but significantly enhance our ability to do so," stated Dr. Susan Wall, Director of the Pardes Educators Program at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies. "We are particularly looking forward to the new course offerings that will bridge the world of theory and practice, taught by professors who are familiar with the day school world in North America," she continued.

"This program represents a unique and necessary kind of learning experience for aspiring day school teachers. The link between Jerusalem and Boston is a powerful one, as we draw upon each institution's strength in challenging and inspiring advanced Jewish study and cutting edge theories and practices in Jewish day school education," stated Harvey Shapiro, Ph.D., Dean of the Shoolman Graduate School of Jewish Education.

Pardes Educator Program courses offered by Hebrew College will be conducted via live video-conferencing, web-based study, visiting professors, and a week of seminars at Hebrew College in Boston. Hebrew College is part of the hub of Jewish educational innovation, in close proximity to fourteen day schools, including both community and denominational schools.
